An alleged meteorite is to blame for the sudden death of a bus driver in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, the Daily Mail reports. Though local officials originally believed the incident to be related to possible explosives left behind by a construction crew, an ongoing investigation revealed no such material at the site of the crash.
"A mishap occurred yesterday when a meteorite fell in the campus of a private engineering college in Vellore district's K Pantharappalli village," Chief Minister Jayalalithaa Jayaram said in a statement, RT reports. "I have ordered the Vellore district administration and hospital officials to provide them best treatment." New York Magazine reports the family of the victim, Mr. V. Kamaraj, has been awarded 100,000 rupees (a little over $1,400) by local government.
Two other people, a university student and two gardeners, were injured during the mysterious arrival of what officials have described as a "dark blue stone resembling a diamond." Though Jayalalithaa's statement on the incident suggests definitive proof that the object was in fact a meteorite, scientists aren't expected to gather and test samples of the debris until later this week. "It was a sound like nothing I've ever heard before," a witness tells NBC News. "There was no smell at all, no fire, nothing."
