Back in February we did a five-part examination of racism in Hollywood due to the lack of diversity at the 2016 Academy Awards. Plenty of well-known figures chimed in on the conversation, including Matt Damon and Dr. Todd Boyd a.k.a. "Notorious Ph.D." As we dove deeper into the conversation about diversity in Hollywood, it became obvious that Hollywood's long and disturbing history of racism wouldn't change without some strong activism. Apparently racism isn't the only scary part about Hollywood, though—the LAPD are investigating a human skull that was found near the Hollywood sign in Griffith Park.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, LAPD homicide investigators and officials from the Los Angeles coroner's office arrived on the scene after hikers spotted the skull around 2 p.m. near the Brush Canyon trail. Although the officials were unable to pinpoint how long the skull had been in the park, they have confirmed that it is "very old."
The discovery of the skull is of particular interest because other body parts were discovered in the same area of the park back in 2014. A dog found the head of Hervey Medellin on a hiking trail, and officials later discovered hands and feet that belonged to the same man. Gabriel Campos-Martinez was eventually convicted of murder and sentenced to 25 years in prison. Officials have yet to comment on the possible relation between the two discoveries.
Forget the Hollywood Forever Cemetery—the Hollywood sign has its very own collection of decomposing body parts. Maybe we'll play it safe and stay out of the shadow of the Hollywood sign for now.
