Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign is fighting its second PR crisis in less than a week. Last week there was the fallout from Bill Clinton facing off with Black Lives Matter protesters at a Hillary event where he defended the time she called black children "super-predators." Today its the aftermath of Hillary and New York City mayor Bill de Blasio making a joke about "colored people time."
The bit was a part of the annual Inner Circle Show held this Saturday, The Slotreports, which is a comedy show for charity by New York politicians. There Hillary appeared onstage after de Blasio introduced her as his "homegirl" according toThe Slot. With her onstage was Hamilton's Leslie Odom Jr.
Hillary, who has been seen trying her hand at comedy before on Saturday Night Live, thanked de Blasio for his endorsement and joked: "Took you long enough." The New York City mayor reportedly took longer than expected to endorse Hillary.
He replied, "Sorry Hillary, I was running on C.P. time." As The Slotexplains, C.P. means "colored people" time stemming from the stereotype that black people are always late.
Odom (who is black) interjects saying he doesn't like those kinds of jokes as a part of the bit, only to have Clinton "clarify" saying the C.P. actually meant "cautious politician time.”
In case you didn't know de Blasio is married to Chirlane McCray, a woman of color, so maybe he thought he could get away with the joke.
Hillary has previously gotten into hot water when it comes to race in her campaign. During this election cycle there was a backlash when she released "7 things Hillary Clinton has in common with your abuela" (abuela means grandmother in spanish) for which she was accused of "Hispandering"—pandering to hispanics.
