You ever eat a knife? Yeah, okay, but you ever eat 40 knives? According to a fresh report from CNN, a man in India gobbled up knives for 2 months straight before ultimately finding himself in surgery to get 40 of those sharp bastards removed from his stomach. The patient, a 42-year-old dad with 2 kids, reportedly battled a "wild urge" to devour metal.

"Even for us, the experienced surgeons, it was frightening," Dr. Jatinder Malhotra told CNN of the 5-hour operation, which took place in Amritsar Friday. "We were so nervous… a small mistake could have taken the patient's life. In my 20 years of practice, I have never seen anything like it."

The source of the patient's "wild urge" remains a mystery, even to the man himself. "I don't know why I used to swallow knives," he told CNN. "I just enjoyed its taste and I was addicted… how people get addicted to alcohol and other things." Doctors are currently performing mental evaluations to determine whether he suffers from a "very rare" disorder that has previously never popped up in any medical journals. Otherwise, he's cleared for discharge within the next 2 days as doctors have deemed him "out of danger."

Some of the swallowed knives were discovered folded, while others had unfolded inside the stomach. Some, doctors say, had even started to rust. "I'm sorry I let my family down," the unidentified man told reporters. "I will never do such acts ever again. I'm a new person now." In what is arguably the most public endorsement of the edible flowering plant in decades, Malhotra said his team recommended the man reach for the spinach the next time he's feeling low on iron.
