18-year-old Tanis Ukena of Layton City, Utah has been arrested on felony charges for allegedly spiking a uniformed police sergeants' drink with methamphetamine and THC. The unidentified police officer ordered lunch Monday at the drive-through of a local Subway restaurant and noticed that his drink tasted off while driving away, Fox 13reported.
The officer began to feel strange after drinking his beverage and was unable to hit the brakes at a red light. He was able to make it back to the station and was then brought to the hospital for treatment.
Tests of the drink found the presence of meth and THC, and surveillance video from the Subway appeares ro show the suspect, Ukena, putting drugs in the drink, Fox 13 reported. Sergeant Clint Bobrowski told Fox 13:
The suspect was seen taking the sergeant's order, filling his drink. The suspect left the sergeant's drink on the counter and left the picture frame. In the video you can see him returning with something in his hand and then leaning over the sergeant's drink for an unusual amount of time. The suspect then provided the sergeant with the drink.
The Layton City Police Department posted a message to Facebook Tuesday thanking citizens for their concern regarding the "sergeant who fell ill on the job yesterday."
In a statement provided to Fox 13, a spokesperson for Subway in Utah, Shawn Cook said:
We are shocked by these charges. Our thoughts are with the Sergeant and his family and we are hoping for a quick recovery. The restaurant owners are working closely with the police in their investigation and will take appropriate action.
The Layton City Police Department did not immediately reply to Complex's request for comment.
