A father in New Jersey jumped from an Interstate bridge holding his two toddler-aged sons on Monday evening. The father did not survive the jump, but his 1-year-old and 3-year-old children lived. The father was identified as 37-year-old John Spincken of Pequannock, New Jersey, according the New Jersey State Police.

The New Jersey State Police posted a statement to their Facebook page Monday night, saying they were called to the scene at Interstate 287 near the Wanaque River. The incident began back at the man's family home, where police were called earlier Monday regarding a domestic dispute, according to CNN.

Spincken's wife told police that she and her husband had an argument, where Spincken threatened to harm their children, then left the house with the two boys, CNN reports.

The statement added, "Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives have determined that the father intentionally jumped with the two children from the I-287 overpass into a wooded area near the Wanaque River." CNN reports that the fall was 100 feet.

Spincken was pronounced dead at the scene at 9 p.m., according to a second statement posted to Facebook on Tuesday, but the two children survived and were taken to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center for treatment for minor injuries. The police investigation is still active and ongoing, according to the second statement.
