A robot cop could be serving as an active police offer in Dubai as soon as 2017. The Dubai Police rolled out their robocop at the GITEX Tech Week this week at the Dubai World Trade Center, according to Emirates 247. Â
While only one robot cop is set to hit the streets as an officer next year, Emirates 247 reported the Dubai Police plan to more thoroughly integrate robots into the police force in 2020.
Colonel Khalid Razooqi, who is General Director of Smart Department Dubai Police, said at GITEX that robocops will perform some of the duties of human police offivers. "Robots could do the work of a police officer on ground at certain situations. We are working on a similar project, and it will be ready by Expo 2020," Razooqi said, according to Emirates 247.
The Dubai Police force is also planning other tech-savvy additions to the way they handle business beyond AI police officers. Emirates 247 reported that Dubai Police have also begun using a mobile app to give traffic fines, and (human) officers are using Google Glass to report from crime scenes.Â
