We’ve seen dating sites for Jewish people, farmers, kinky folks, and even white people. With 1 in 8 American adults admitting to smoking weed, it only makes sense that stoners would also seek love interests riding a similar wave.
If you’re searching for a safe space to propose Netflix & trill, you might find it in "High There!,” a dating app for people who like marijuana. Complex spoke to co-founder and CEO Darren Roberts about his inspiration for creating the app, stoners finding love, and the future of High There!
What was your inspiration for creating this app?
My inspiration was knowing countless of cannabis consumers—both recreational and medicinal—for whom cannabis was such a positive part of their lives, who were really looking for a way to connect with others like them without stigma.
There were countless social networks that catered to all types of people—but none that truly looked at the cannabis community and their need to share and come together and chat without stigma.
We saw a real need in the market and built High There! to meet that need. High There! allows the cannabis enthusiasts to chat with like-minded individuals and share photos, videos, experiences, and content in our JOINTS newsfeed feature. This had not existed before we launched High There!
What has High There's journey been like since it launched?
High There! initially launched [in February 2015] with a great chat technology that allowed people to meet and connect, which is how we became coined "the Tinder for Tokers." And we saw some incredible initial momentum at launch.
But things really took off when we launched our JOINTS newsfeed which we added to our navigation menu in March. People could share all aspects of their lives on High There! with photos, and video, and learn about each other through JOINTS. This has allowed thousands upon thousands of people to forge meaningful conversations and relationships on High There!.
High There! has close to 400,000 users and is used globally. We have people from California New York, Florida, to New Zealand, Germany, Netherland and the like all using the app daily and connecting with each other.
We have couples who have met on High There! and are getting married, as well as people and groups who have met and made real meaningful friendships on the app.
What are your future hopes for High There?
We are so excited about the future of High There!. Our network and community continues to grow every day and we are psyched to see so many people meet and form relationships on the app. We have some really great features and updates coming out over the next few months and we are exciting to bring those updates to our community and beyond.
