Tech and retail entrepreneur Jeff Bezos is a visionary. He’s the founder of Amazon and owner of the Washington Post. He’s one of the most respected modern American businessmen, and he’s constantly pushing the envelope of what’s possible.

Perhaps Bezos’ most ambitious project to date has surfaced. He reportedly plans to create a delivery service that goes from Earth to the moon by mid-2020. The billionaire plans to do so through Blue Origin, the company he created with the goal to enable private human access to space.

Newsweek called the service “a lunar version of Amazon Prime.”

The service would support “a permanently inhabited lunar settlement, in which an Amazon-like shipment service would be used to deliver cargo and sustain the colony,” they reported.

The Post, as you would expect, was the first to report on the news. The paper says it obtained a copy of a “proprietary and confidential” white paper, and Bezos’ team confirmed its authenticity.

The Post article announcing the venture lays out Bezos’ dream of putting a human presence on the moon.

“It is time for America to return to the Moon—this time to stay,” Bezos said. “A permanently inhabited lunar settlement is a difficult and worthy objective. I sense a lot of people are excited about this.”

Interest in putting people on the moon seems to be at an all-time high as rock star entrepreneurs like Bezos, Richard Branson, and Elon Musk have created their own ventures to rival NASA. Musk, the founder of SpaceX and Tesla, announced earlier this week that SpaceX plans to fly two private citizens on a tourist trip around the moon by next year.

Bezos has previously stated his goal of putting tourists into space starting in 2018.
