A woman who was stranded for more than four hours on a crane at a construction site in the city’s downtown core on Wednesday morning will be charged with mischief, Toronto police confirm.
Officers were called to the Church and Wellesley neighbourhood shortly before 4:00 am after reports of a woman trapped on a crane. Apparently, the woman climbed up to the very top of the boom of the crane and then somehow managed to lower herself down a cable onto a two-foot block on the crane's hook.
Streets in the area were blocked off and bystanders packed nearby sidewalks to watch the dramatic rescue go down.
A firefighter and the woman ultimately rappelled down to safety at around 8:30 am. The woman was placed in handcuffs when she reached the ground and police confirm that she will be charged with mischief.
Fire crews have said there was no immediate indication as to why the woman climbed atop the crane. They believe, however, that she had climbed up the crane, crawled out onto the end of it, and slid down a cable to the large pulley device she got stranded on.
