The next stop is... Whitby?

Since 1921, the Toronto Transit Commission has been the most affordable and reasonable way to get across Canada's busiest metropolis. Whether you live in North York, Liberty Village, or Midtown, you or someone you know takes the TTC on a daily basis. It's not just commuters within the city limits either. In fact, many GTA residents use Toronto's public transit system to get from Point A to Point B. This means the system's famous red and white busses cover a ton of ground, and can be seen everywhere from Scarborough to Pearson International Airport. One place you don't expect to see a TTC bus, however, is chilling in the streets of Whitby, Ontario.

What the heck was a TTC vehicle doing 57 kilometers away from its regular stomping grounds? That was a question many Whitby residents had when they spotted one abandoned on the corner of Bonacord Avenue and Cochrane Street. According to Durham Regional Police, a bold idiot stole the bus from a Toronto garage and decided to take it for a joy ride in the wee hours of the night. After a considerable drive out of town, the thief left his ride in the middle of a relatively quiet Whitby neighbourhood.

Authorities soon charged a 32-year-old man who lived just a few blocks from where the stolen bus was dumped. Durham Regional Police shared the news on Twitter earlier today, and also let the Toronto Star know that stuff like this isn't a one-off thing. “People have taken joyrides in our vehicles,” Staff Sgt. Tim Maw told reporters. While the bus remained completely intact, the suspect will likely face some pretty serious fines and time in court. In the meantime, you can file this under utter stupidity.
