Suspect Dead After Congressman, Others Shot at Congressional Baseball Practice in Virginia (UPDATE)

The shooting took place at a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia.

UPDATED 12:00 p.m. ET: Law enforcement sources say the suspect in the Virginia shooting has now been identified as 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson from Illinois, NBC Newsreported. The suspect reportedly engaged in a gunfight with police officers, during which he was shot. Trump, who once told America he could "shoot somebody" without losing any voters, later announced the suspect had died.

Though there have been reports of the suspect asking whether those at the baseball field were affiliated with a specific political party, NBC Newscited "officials at the scene" as saying that part of the investigation remains unclear.

The injured Capitol Police cops were identified as Krystal Griner and David Bailey, the Hill reported:

A congressman was among those injured during a shooting in Virginia early Wednesday morning. The shooting occurred at a baseball field in Alexandria used for congressional baseball practice, CBS Newsreported. The injured reportedly includes House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, two Capitol Hill cops, and the suspect. Scalise was reportedly shot in the hip.

Rep. Mo Brooks, who was not injured during the shooting, said he heard more than 50 shots during the incident. "I was on deck about to hit batting practice on the third base side of home plate, and I hear a loud 'bam,'" Brooks, who also said the shooter "appeared to be a white male," told CNN. "I look around, and behind third base and the third base dugout, I see a rifle. And I see a little bit of a body. I hear another 'bam' and I realize, there's an active shooter." Brooks, Scalise, and others were practicing for an upcoming charity baseball game.

Sen. Rand Paul, who was also at the practice, said the police response saved lives. "We're actually very lucky they were there," Paul said. "The gun sounded like an AR-15 to most of us. We couldn't see the gun, but it was a rifle. One of the things that's really fortunate, and probably why...everybody probably would have died except for the fact that the Capitol Hill police were there."

At the time of this writing, the Alexandria Police Department had reported the suspect as being "in custody and not a threat."

Democratic members of Congress who were practicing at a different field miles away "immediately stopped and said a prayer together" after being informed of the shooting, a CBS News source said.
