A New York City Police Department officer was killed early Wednesday after being "ambushed" inside a mobile command unit. The 12-year veteran of the force Miosotis Familia was shot to death by Alexander Bonds in a Bronx neighborhood shortly after midnight, the Associated Pressreported.

"PO Miosotis Familia has been assassinated in an unprovoked attack on cops assigned to keep NYers safe," NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill said. "Keep her family in your prayers." Familia was 48.

Surveillance footage captured Bonds exiting a nearby convenience store before "moving tightly along the wall" and walking "purposefully" toward the mobile command vehicle, police said. The mobile command post had been established in the area following a triple shooting in March.  Familia was writing in a notebook in the front of the vehicle when Bonds fired a single round through the window and hit her in the head.

After Familia's partner called for help, two other officers encountered Bonds about one block away from the scene. Bonds then drew a revolver on the officers, according to the New York Times. Officers opened fire and killed Bonds, accidentally striking a bystander, who is now in "stable condition," in the process.

Bonds had been paroled in 2013 after serving seven years for robbery in a Syracuse-area prison. In a Facebook video posted last September that's since been reviewed by detectives, Bonds criticized the facility's conditions and the behavior of police officers. "I got broken ribs for a reason, son, we gonna shake," he said in the clip. "We gonna do something. We can't be dying for free, getting raped for free, just for them to give you hush money. Is you stupid? I don't want the money. I want justice."

A friend of Bonds, however, told the Times Wednesday that she was not aware of any alleged "anti-police" sentiment. "He was a sweetheart," Elaine Lucas said, nothing that Bonds had been "in and out of" local homeless shelters.
