A white beauty blogger has come under fire after she decided to paint her face dark brown and challenge others to do the same. The blogger, Vika Shapel of Portland, posted a photo of her half-painted face with a call for people to check out her new video.
โSomething fun is coming to YouTube, idk if there is a challenge like this but we havenโt seen it so Im calling it the chocolate challenge!โ Shapel captioned an Instagram photo of herself and a friend, who also had half of her face painted brown. โCome watch us transform into deep chocolate skin tones from our pasty pale.โ
Shapel has since deleted the post. She apologized in an interview with Yahoo Beauty, claiming it was an honest mistake.
โI simply wanted to see how I looked in a deeper skin tone,โ Shapel said. โI wasnโt aware of the whole black-face concept before people began commenting it on the photo. I would like to apologize to people that were hurt or offended by my post, and it wonโt happen again.โ
People were none too pleased with Shapelโs idea of a โchocolate challenge.โ
just saw a pic of these 2 ppl doing half of their face w/dark makeup & wanted to call it "the chocolate challenge". Lord please help them๐๐ค
this "challenge" doesn't exist because people have common sense๐๐๐๐ the disrespect... pic.twitter.com/j1SEXPdWhr
Why?! What do I have to do to convince people that my skin tone is not a trend/a mask/a makeup challenge/ a new concept for entertainment?!
So @vika97662612 decided to post this picture which is clearly blackface & she decided to call it "the chocolate challenge" pic.twitter.com/O4NutrEtTH
They also curled their have to make themselves look more "black" wtff ๐คฆ๐ปโโ๏ธ๐คฆ๐ปโโ๏ธ
She's deleting comments and blocking everyone too. Deleted the photo and vid but girl no. I don't think so๐
"The Chocolate Challenge" is a funny way to spell blackface pic.twitter.com/NcqRfQ26xC
Let this be a lesson learned (again): blackface is never acceptable.
