When the worlds of hip-hop and rock meet, the results have historically been pretty uneven. For every "Walk This Way" success there is a "Funky Man" to remind us that sometimes it's best to stay in your lane. So when an artist we love from the hip-hop world like Kid Cudi tells us he's forming a rock band, we get a little nervous.

But one listen to the WZRD album, and we knew Cudder and his right-hand producer Dot Da Genius had things under control. The duo successfully experiments with a more guitar-centric sound while still retaining the moody melodic core that makes Cudi's music so great. While shooting the guys out in the California desert for Complex's WZRD week, we got them to talk about picking up the guitar and bass for their genre-defying project.
