Listen: Turk f/ Gunplay "Blame It On the System"

The fourth member of the Hot Boyz is free after an eight-year sentence, and he's brought Gunplay along for a tough new street track.

Turk was a member of The Hot Boyz alongside Lil Wayne, Juvenile and B.G. in the late 1990s; the group's second album, Guerilla Warfare, went platinum and is widely considered a Southern classic. All four members of the group went on to fruitful solo careers, and Turk's Mannie Fresh-produced solo debut Young N Thuggin, which included some of the beatmaker's best work, went gold.

But in 2004, a Memphis S.W.A.T. team raided an apartment on the hunt for illegal narcotics; Turk claimed to have been hidden in a closet and that the officers hadn't identified themselves. He shot from inside the closet, he said, hitting one of the officers. The rapper spent the next eight years in prison for second-degree attempted murder of the deputy he injured.

And in October of last year, he was released. His collaboration with Gunplay is entitled "Blame it on the System," and has a pretty scathing opening lines that imply he's relying on personal experience: "Every second, every minute, every hour, every day / they put a n***a ass behind bars and throw the key away." It's an explicitly political indictment of the prison system. Drumma Boy provides an ominous beat, underlining Gunplay's promise that his "pistol grip pump, knock the pieces out your puzzle."
