How do your favorite rappers write their rhymes? To find out, Complex TV has started a new series, The Process. Hosted by Hot 97's Peter Rosenberg and shot at New York City's legendary Chung King Studios, The Process features intimate conversations with established legends as well as exciting up-and-comers about how they put their rhymes together and the magic that happens when the pen hits the pad. New episodes of The Process premiere every Tuesday on Complex TV.

In this episode of The Process with Peter Rosenberg, Joey Bada$$ details his start in rap, which has quickly blossomed into a career for the 18-year-old Brooklyn native. Joey explains how he met his manager Jonny Shipes, as well as adjusting to rap life at such a young age. "It was totally awesome. The only difficult part about it was breaking it down to my mom. I'm trying to go to the studio after school, putting in these hours, find this balance," he says.

Joey describes his comfort level when working with Pro Era, which is something he enjoys doing. "It's more than just one person contributing ideas," he says "It's really easy to get things done because it's like, 'If I got a verse and you got a verse and he got a hook,' the song's done. It's way more fun to work when you actually have somebody involved."

Rosenberg asks Joey about his writing process, which he says can vary based on what he's trying to accomplish. "How I avoid writer's block is always switching it up, like always switching up my structure," he says. "Sometimes I will be walking and a melody will come to my head and I'm like, alright, I'm just going to keep repeating it and keep adding on. Or I might be feeling another way. Like, maybe I just want to draw something out. I want to actually illustrate the picture to the listener."

Watch the full clip above, where Joey Bada$$ also breaks down the creation of his standout cut "Waves" and working with DJ Premier. As a bonus, check out Joey's recent appearance on The Combat Jack Show where he talks about getting into the rap game, his latest mixtape Summer Knights and almost signing with Jay Z's Roc Nation.
