There are many events in rap history that are either unknown or forgotten, from album releases to deaths to random ass events most of us can't even recall. As an attempt to remember those moments, Complex will share an event that helped shape hip-hop in a sometimes minor, sometimes major way. Join us as we look back on This Day in Rap History.

March 5, 2006

On March 5, 2006, Three 6 Mafia won the Oscar for Best Original Song for "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" from the Hustle and Flow soundtrack. Three 6 Mafia was the first hip-hop group to win an Oscar for Best Original Song—however, in 2002 Eminem's "Lose Yourself" became the first rap song to win the award. To top it off, Three 6 also became the first hip-hop artists to perform at the Academy Awards.
