It seems we're well-primed for a rich album season to follow a seemingly endless summer festival season, what with pre-orders for Porter Robinson's worlds and now Dillon Francis' Money Sucks, Friends Rule gaining steam by the day. Premiering yesterday on Sirius XM and available when you pre-order Money Sucks, Friends Rule on iTunes (which is now due out on October 28), "When We Were Young" is 100% an effort designed for the massive festival stage, and while many of the "purists" who write here (I include myself in that margin) roll our eyes at lyric videos, it's oddly fitting for this tune. While the vibes from the Francis/Sultan/Shephard instrumental are as big-room as they get, it's far from a simplistic production (as many big room tracks frankly are), and the effort blends seamlessly with the bubblegum-catchy lyrics from The Chain Gang of 1974. Yes, this is Dillon and Co. at their absolute poppiest, but like nearly all of his previous work, it gives the impression of being run through and refined with a fine-toothed comb many times over. It is a close-to-perfect amalgamation of Dillon Francis' aesthetic with those Sultan and Ned Shephard anthemic inclinations, and that's about the best thing you can ask for from any high-profile collaboration.
