Over the weekend, I watched a lot of an hour-long video of Paris Hilton DJing in Ibiza. I didn't watch it with the intent to "see if she was really mixing," as I'd heard she was being tutored by a few prominent/competent DJs over the years. I don't assume she's hitting "play" on some "Ibiza Tour August 2014" pre-recorded mix in her laptop, then miming "DJ moves" for sixty minutes. I did see what appeared to be a crowd who might just be gawking at the weird trajectory of Paris Hilton's career, as opposed to actually wanting to hear her anthem-bash up in the club. Part of that could be that her actual performance is bland... which is where I come in.

See, I really want to help. There's no better way to tell detractors to "shut the fuck up" than showing up and proving why you're earning that check. Going through the motions is cool, and maybe Paris is really on some "I could care less" ish about what people say regarding her moves in EDM, but you'd think she'd WANT to get her DJ chops up, just to prove the naysayers wrong. And since she's constantly "jetting" back and forth to Ibiza, she should have some time to study up on different techniques, right?

This isn't an end-all, be-all batch of tips for Paris. I've already tried helping DJs out there with a number of great tutorials I found online; this collection is a bit more tailored to Paris and how she can fine-tune what she's already doing. Who knows–maybe someone will take her seriously enough to be booked at one of the bigger EDM festivals... right?

Throw in some tech house

He might tell weak jokes, but this guy knows what he's talking about, and could help show Paris how to add some variety her sets (without totally abandoning the BALLS TO THE WALL EDM) easily.

Enhance your mixes

DJ Sos might be highlighting more of a drum & bass sound, but she digs into mixing harmonies, beats, bars, and phrasing. Could help Paris really get some solid blends and transitions happening.

Use Mixed In Key

Keeping up with that harmonic mixing life, we have to have DJ Endo breaking down Mixed In Key, which many DJs swear by. Software like this could really help Paris sort out her files and take things to a new level.

Proper utilize the EQ controls

We noticed that Paris rides the EQs heavy; allow DJ Shortee to explain how to proper use your EQ to make everything sound smoother in the mix–without that weird bending over thing Paris does.

Work on your posture

Take it from someone who spends most of his time in a desk chair: you need to work on your posture. All of that bending over while EQing looks awkward and won't help in the long run, when that DJ career is over and done with. And that's not to say bending over and arching your back is unavoidable while mixing, but when you aren't doing that weird EQ bend, use some of these techniques to help yourself out, Paris.

Create compelling build-ups

Paris seems to be super into the allure of EDM, the idea of building up tension then releasing it (which is why her hands are in the air so often). It might take a bit more practice, but she can add equipment and start mapping out tracks to really play around with the sounds she's digging. Hell, she's also releases music; it might be a good way to incorporate live remixes of her own tracks.

Incorporate Ableton Live in the mix

Maybe Paris wants to get some more out of her mixing. If so, she should look at getting Ableton Live to really diversify her sets, especially when it comes to adding in special effects on her mixes.

Spice up your performance

In watching that one video from Ibiza, it appears that when Paris isn't twiddling knobs or holding her hand in the air, she's doing a weird bending over move or taking a selfie (with some actual mixing as well). While going to a club used to be about hearing music, in this world where the DJ is the superstar, you need to get your performance game in check. You don't need to be doing cartwheels, and I don't expect her to do the whole DJ Marky "cigarette scratch" trick, but a little flair and pizazz can go a long way.

Study this James Zabiela set

While we have a feeling using a controller and a laptop might be easier for her, setup-wise, maybe she could learn a thing or three about truly constructing sets and crafting mesmerizing mixes by a guy who quite literally helped test and develop some of the best CDJs in the market.

Destroy your equipment

If all else fails, Paris can get out that aggression and destroy every piece of equipment associated with her DJ career.
