Chicago rapper Saba dropped a promising mixtape, ComfortZone, over the summer, and today, he's dropping the video for one of his biggest songs yet, "Burnout" featuring Eryn Allen Kane. The soulful piano paired with some heavy drums set the perfect tone for Saba to spit his candid rhymes about feeling absolutely burned out by life. Kane's soft, breezy voice is refreshing on the chorus with some of the most relatable, up-lifting lines like, "Hey universe, don't come at me with your bullshit/Your nonsense, your issues, can't handle it/These problems keep me up at night/But in the end they're just problems and everybody gets them, right?"
"Burnout was one of the first songs conceptualized for ComfortZone," Saba said over email. "I thought of the title while I was in college my second year, it was literally how I felt: burned out. The chords (by pianist Justin Jackson) sat on my computer for over a year before I finished the rest of the track and began writing. Burnout was also my favorite video game in like '05, it just made sense. The chorus of the song (written by Eryn Allen Kane) used to go "Shut up, Shut up where the keys to my DeLorean at?" and it was basically a game time decision to change it."
The trippy, partially stop motion video for "Burnout," which was directed by Tom Vin, Elijiah Alvarado, and Caves, and produced by the Chicago's Heart of the City, is a stunning, timelapsed video that features Saba cruising around, only to be a dream-like sequence in the end.
