Out of My Head: Five Songs I Listened to This Weekend

Fetty Wap is Frank Sinatra.

None

Finally, Plies drops a hasty mixtape cut in which he addresses his infamous "color money!!!" scuffle with a perplexing fan! And Dej Loaf teams up with Game to drop a decent feature follow-up to last year's "Try Me," while Fetty Wap is on his third hot single of the month! Share these headphones. Walk with me.

Fetty Wap "Show You"

Released: April 16, 2015

Remember when Jay Z fancied himself the Sinatra of hip-hop? (This is Blueprint 2-era S. Carter, approximately.) Well, if Jay had ever possessed chops like Fetty Wap, we might have taken that otherwise ludicrous comparison more seriously! I can actually imagine Fetty Wap plausibly covering several of Sinatra's essential singles and renditions, like "Fly Me to the Moon," "Witchcraft," and "The Way You Look Tonight."

Game f/ Dej Loaf "Ryda"

Released: April 24, 2015

We gave Game flack last week for recycling freestyle verses like they're going out of style, which, of course, they are. Thankfully, he had a timely Billboard op-ed and a hot new single up both sleeves, making for a double-tap distraction from his half-stepping elsewhere. As for Dej Loaf: Sell Sole was boring, and "Blood" is a real bummer, but "Ryda" is sunny and popping with the top down.

Alessia "Here"

Released: April 24, 2015

Remember last year when Elle Varner dropped a tremendously neglected pop single (f/ A$AP Ferg!) about being sore and disgruntled in the club? Well, Alessia's "Here" is "Don't Wanna Dance" cross-pollinated with a vengeful Adele single, essentially. Which is much appreciated, because I really miss Adele. "Here" is Alessia's debut single for Def Jam, so I'm hoping her full project is imminently fantastic.

Plies "Dayum!"

Released: April 29, 2015

Jahlil Beats, in his infinite productivity, somehow managed to plagiarize his very own "Repo" from 2012 to create the beat that would become Plies' "Dayum!" in 2015. I'm not as mad at that, however, as I am at Plies' breathless self-memory on "Dayum!", which namechecks "the 'Gram," "on fleek," "Sweet Pwussy Satday," and the fan who recently tossed him off a stage. "Hands on Mayweather level," he says.

40oz Van and Slim K f/ Aaliyah, Amerie, Jennifer Lopez, et al., "Side B"

Released: May 1, 2015

Confession: Though I cherish Aaliyah, I can't stand "Rock the Boat," that's word to Styles. Thankfully, 40oz Van and Slim K just chopped it to perfection, along with Amerie's "Why Don't We Fall in Love," which is forever the jam, and J. Lo's "All I Have," which is also good but in this case distressing because chopping Jennifer Lopez's voice makes her sound like David Ruffin.
