Premiere: Listen to Joey Stylez’ “Pride Of Lions” f/ Dragonette

This is Aboriginal trap music at its finest.

Canadian rapper and First Nations activist Joey Stylez is back with the powerful lead single from his forthcoming EP Grey Magic. “Pride Of Lions” is probably best described as Aboriginal trap music, assisted by an explosive pop hook from Dragonette’s Martina Sorbara.

Saskatchewan’s own Joey Stylez has been exploring Native American Culture through the lens of mainstream hip-hop for nearly a decade, and his provocative message has made him a staple of the Canadian music scene. As he puts the finishing touches on his new project, the veteran emcee sounds as ferocious as ever.

Stylez first met Dragonette’s Martina Sorbara at the JUNOs, and their instant connection gave way to an inevitable collaboration. "When Martina laid down her parts, I couldn't do anything but let off a proud smile,” he told Complex. “I knew after all these years of floating around from city to city, I was finally about to showcase what I was born to share with the world. So, I let the warrior spirit write my bars."

For Sorbara, the collaboration came together organically. “One early morning after coming home from a party, I had an overwhelming desire to write something,” she says. “This particular track Joey sent me ended up being the one to bring the song out of me. It’s a song about feeling your own power, and being in tune and comfortable with your inner, animalistic strength."
