This weekend, Straight Outta Compton hit theaters nationwide and broke box office predictions by bringing in $56.1 million. Straight Outta Compton’s success has likely helped with the album sales of Dre’s first album in 16 years, the accompanying soundtrack he called Compton.
In an official report by Billboard, the former N.W.A member’s LP had a strong debut at No. 2 with 295,000 equivalent album units. 276,000 of those copies were pure album sales. Compton also debuted at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. On that list, Compton is his third chart-topper behind 2001 and The Chronic.
In front of Dre’s Compton is Luke Bryan’s Kill the Lights. The album is Bryan’s third No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 with 345,000 album units sold (of that amount, 320,000 were pure album sales). Overall, the album is the third-largest selling album of 2015 behind Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly and Drake’s If You’re Reading This, It’s Too Late.
