Demi Lovato is back with a vengeance. The 23-year-old pop singer threw her hat into the ring for song of the summer with the Max Martin-produced "Cool for the Summer" back in July. The provocative track served as the lead single off her fifth studio album in seven years, titled Confident, led by producers Martin, Dr. Luke, and Stargate. Lovato has never looked—or been—more comfortable in her own skin, but it's been a long time coming.

The former Disney Channel star has spent the last five years battling personal demons, including bulimia, bipolar disorder, and subsequently, drug and alcohol issues. But she rose above, finding love with her current beau, Wilmer Valderrama, and success with the release of four albums, the most recent being Demi in 2013. Now, she's gearing up for Confident, set to be released on Oct. 16.

The cover star of Complex’s October/November issue spent time in Los Angeles with Complex Music’s managing editor, Christine Werthman, to talk about Confident, her long-term relationship with Valderrama, and feeling confident in her own skin. Photographed by Tony Kelly, Demi Lovato peels back the layers of her personal life just as she prepares to release her most revealing album yet.
