Premiere: Listen to Geoffroy’s “Soaked In Gold”

It’s the sonic equivalent of the honeymoon phase.

Montreal singer/songwriter Geoffroy turned heads with his emotive debut single “You Say” this summer, and as he preps his Soaked In Gold EP, we’ve got a look at the smouldering title track.

“Soaked In Gold” is a gripping electro ballad, anchored by a digital stomp-clap and Geoffroy’s remarkable falsetto. A heavy, pulsating bassline and a filtered synth lead fill out the arrangement, until the song unravels at its climax, leaving only vocals and a bass drop for the finale. Sampha and Chet Faker are good points of reference, but Geoffroy’s inclination towards electro-acoustic experimentation puts him in a category all his own.

“This song is about making love, about the infinite beauty of a woman. I should try writing about something else maybe, but I can't help myself,” Geoffroy told Complex via email. “I was just starting to date a girl at the time it was written, so I guess all the novelty and the excitement of the first months turned into a song.” If “Soaked In Gold” is the sonic equivalent of the honeymoon phase of a relationship, that serves as an explanation for the disenchantment you’ll feel when the song ends. Luckily, in this case, you can always go back to the beginning and press play.
