Sam Smith Responds to People Calling Him Out for His Tweets About Racism

Sam Smith is taking to Instagram to deal with some recent backlash. Earlier this week, the singer made headlines when he tweeted about his friend being on the receiving end of verbal racism in London. While Sam expressed his shock, the internet expressed its surprise at Sam's realization that this is still a prevalent issue in 2016.

In response, he has posted a message on Instagram to reply to the attacks head on. "This is not about me in any way," he writes. "It's about a deep rooted issue we have in our society that should now be extinct." He goes on to cite his experience with being bullied for being gay, and closes with the statement, "Here's to people being allowed to be people." Read his full response below.
