Stampede season is fast approaching, but there’s more than one party in Calgary this summer. Since 2007, Sled Island has welcomed the best in punk, indie, hip-hop, and electronic music for a five day festival for 250+ bands, and 30,000+ concert-goers. This year, headliners like Guided By Voices, Kaytranada, Angel Olsen, Peaches, and HEALTH will make Sled Island one to remember, but what else does this eclectic festival—and the city it calls home—have to offer?

Complex Canada’s guide to Sled Island will walk you through our daily picks, food and drink recommendations, record stores, breweries, comedy and film recommendations, and more.

Sled Island 2016 runs from June 22nd June 26th in Calgary, Alberta. Buy your passes here.

Our Daily Picks

Tuesday, June 21st: Technical Kidman @ Commonwealth Bar (11:30PM)

Montreal’s Technical Kidman are electronic music’s answer to a frontal lobotomy. These analog experimenters blur the lines between art-pop and electronic noise, and their kickoff set at Sled Island will set the tone for five days of weird and wild music discovery.

Wednesday, June 22nd: Beach Season @ The HiFi Club (12:30AM)

Beach Season are Calgary’s hometown heroes of electro-R&B, blending serene synths, vibrant grooves, and laid-back vocal hooks in their live performance sets. It’s equal parts bedroom eyes and club vibes. Let’s put it this way if—Majestic Casual was ever your thing, you don’t want to miss these guys.

Thursday, June 23rd: Junglepussy @ Commonwealth Bar (11:30PM)

Energetic, confident, and uninhibited, Junglepussy knows how to throw a party. The Brooklyn rapper channels Lil’ Kim, Erykah Badu, Lady Saw, and a host of other badass women, subverting your expectations while having a little fun with it.

Friday, June 24th: L.A. Foster @ Flames Central (10:00PM)

On her latest release, Saudade, Montreal’s L.A. Foster shows off a voice that’s as light as air overtop of deep electro grooves, produced by Young Galaxy’s Stephen Ramsay. Get your introspective dance music fix, as she opens for Kaytranada as part of Sled Island.

Saturday, June 25th: Hood Joplin @ The HiFi Club (9:30PM)

Edmonton’s answer to PC Music is Manicure Records, a boutique digital label that’s home to artists like Ponibbi, Ghibli, FIJI, and Sled Island-bound DJ/producer Hood Joplin. Minimal electro rhythms routinely mingle with hip-hop anthems and Bollywood melodies in her sets, pleasing club kids and Screwed Up Records fans alike.

Sunday, June 26th: Slo Dance @ Central Memorial Park (1:00PM)

Calgary-based act Slo Dance may only have one release to their name, but the R&B duo’s “Wasted (Demo)” places them in a league of contemporary alt-R&B that’s very difficult to pull off without proper chops. Vocalist Kaleem Khan’s emotive croon can go toe-to-toe with the James Blakes and Abel Tesfayes of the world, while producer Evangelos Lambrinoudis II borrows from Jai Paul as much as he does Illangelo. We’re psyched to hear more from these two.
