R&B star Maxwell released his long-awaited new album late Thursday night. blackSUMMERS'night is the singer's first release since 2009's similarly-titled BLACKsummers'night

The new record is the second volume in a planned trilogy. Complex spoke to him about that, and how he dealt with Prince's recent passing, just a few days ago.

Judging by the reaction on Twitter, the long wait between albums only made fans more enthusiastic about the project's release.

The new album is more upbeat and electronic-sounding than the previous installment of the trilogy. The singer recently told the Wall Street Journal that the albums are "loosely based on the concept of a night out for a woman named Black Summers." He also said that the final album of the three, which is nearly finished, would have "a political slant."

blackSUMMERS'night is co-produced by Maxwell and Hod David, the same team that also co-produced BLACKsummers'night. David goes back a long way with the singer, having co-written three songs on Maxwell's 1996 debut Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite.
