According to Anderson Paak, the Malibu singer has performed upwards of 150 shows in 2016. The extensive time touring doesn’t leave much room in Paak’s schedule for collaborating with Aftermath founder Dr. Dre, but Paak says he has a formula for sharing music with the man who inked him to a headline-grabbing deal in January.

“Whenever I’m in town I just go over there to kick it with him, and we just make something,” Paak told J Cruz in a recent interview with Los Angeles radio station Power 106. “We just drink some Hendricks gin and chop it up...We work really fast. He’s always inspired off of something.”

Paak and Dr. Dre share credits on nine tracks from Dre’s 2015 album, Compton (A Soundtrack By Dr. Dre), and Paak named fellow Compton collaborators Xzibit and Fredwreck as guests during the recording sessions. According to Billboard, Compton sold over 500,000 units by Jan. 30. While Paak added that he solicits feedback from Dre after sending tracks in from the road and tries to gauge a reaction from Dre’s body language, the collaborations are generally put away for future projects.

“I’ll be like, ‘What you think of this, man?’” Paak said. “I could tell right off top. I’ll play him something, and I can just tell if he gets uncomfortable. It’s like, ‘Okay, I’ll just skip [this track].’”

Anderson Paak is currently touring in support of two pre-Aftermath projects, Malibu and Yes Lawd! The latter is a duet album with Los Angeles-based producer Knxwledge and is currently available via Stones Throw on vinyl, CD, and all digital formats.
