Did Drake’s Summer Sixteen Surpass Watch the Throne as Hip-Hop’s Highest Grossing Tour Ever?

Drake says he has the receipts to prove 'Summer Sixteen' was hip-hop's highest grossing tour ever.

The friendly back-and-forth between Drake and Jay Z has included Drake’s not-so-subtle accusation that Jay has retired to the bourgeois set of those who dine on fondue plates. There’s also the matter of Jay allegedly calling Drake "Mrs. Drizzy" and the version of “Pop Style” featuring Jay Z and Kanye never making it to the retail version of Views. Now the crown for the highest-grossing hip-hop tour could reportedly become a point of discussion between Jay and Drake, as the latter has made claims of surpassing 2011’s Watch The Throne tour for top honors.

Sunday morning found Drake alerting his 31.9 million Instagram followers that his Summer Sixteen tour raked in $84.3 million over the course of 54 domestic shows.

Jay Z and Kanye West’s tour reportedly grossed $75 million before bringing in even more overseas. Back in July of 2016, when Forbes first began crunching numbers for Drake’s Summer Sixteen dates, Live Nation declined to reveal any estimates regarding the domestic portion of the tour. However, given Drake’s immense commercial success throughout 2016, the figures could very well be accurate. Forbes estimated Drake pulled in $1 million during the opening night of the tour.

If the figures are confirmed by the likes of Pollstar, then what Drake pockets from Summer Sixteen will put a cap on an epic year for the Toronto MC. Drake’s Views album sold over 850,000 copies during its first week of release before being certified double platinum. When he wasn’t making regular appearances on the charts, Drake was keeping himself in the spotlight by expanding his partnerships with Apple and the Jordan Brand and spending time with the likes of Jennifer Lopez.
