It's no secret that Brampton has established itself as a bit of a hotbed for musical talent over the past few years: Roy Woods, K. Forest and Derin Falana are just a few of the artists who hail from the Toronto suburb, and 5HEV (pronounced Shev) is hoping he's next up out of the B's. He's been releasing a steady string of music over the last year, including the recent "Groupies" which is an ode to celebrity couples including Lil Uzi Vert and Brittany Byrd.
Now 5HEV is back with another big tune, and for this one he's linked up with some other notable Toronto talent to bring it to life—from the features to the production and art direction. With increased success and buzz usually comes increased drama, and "Politics" addresses that very phenomenon. "(This) is the anthem for people who wanna enjoy the fruit of their labour without having to deal with the haters," 5HEV tells Complex via email.
"Politics" features a guest verse by Prime's Donnie and is produced by Murda Beatz, who recently dropped his own mixtape, Keep God First, which featured everyone from PARTYNEXTDOOR and 2 Chainz to Jeremih and Ty Dolla Sign. Murda is also reported to have a couple of tracks on Drake's forthcoming More Life. "Politics" was mixed by Toronto-based engineer DotDaEngineer—who has worked with Safe and RamRiddlz—and also features artwork by Mihailo Andic, who has previously done album art work for Derek Wise, CMDWN, 6lack and Lil Yachty, to name a few. Needless to say, 5HEV is in good company.
