There's always been a strong connection between hip hop and basketball: they both rose to widespread popularity and prominence in the same era (the '90s); rappers are often seen hanging out with ballers; and basketball apparel has become one of the pillars of hip-hop fashion—from jerseys to other teamwear to shoes. Toronto's Luu Breeze has decided to pay tribute to the game and one of its shining stars with his new track "West Boogie," which we are premiering here on Complex.
In case you've been living under a rock, Russell Westbrook just wrapped up an amazing season with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Though his team didn't make it past the first round of the playoffs, Russ became only the second player in history to average a triple-double for the season and was subsequently named 2016–17 NBA Most Valuable Player. He gained widespread praise for his achievements, from everyone including his former OKC teammate Kevin Durant and even Taylor Swift (?!?)
In "West Boogie" Luu channels the winning spirit of Westbrook, likening himself to the MVP except with "three chains round (his) neck; triple dub to (his) name)." The cover art continues to play into the idea that the best things come in threes, and features a cartoon Westbrook in three different moods.
