Adobe Throws Flash A Lifeline With HTML5 Converter

Archaically designed websites now have a future.

Most sites today are built with Flash. Most sites are thusly archaic. Adobe, the developer behind the still-ubiquitous multimedia platform, is tempering the impending takeover by rival HTML5 with the release of Wallaby, an experimental tool designed to convert Flash to HTML5.

Wallaby, for now, is limited in its capabilities. Developers can’t make wholesale changes to website code, but those looking to update banners and other simpler animations have a quick fix for their pages. Understandably, some elements will be lost in translation, such as filters, blending, etc.

Last April, Steve Jobs and Apple abandoned Flash support, leaving the technology for dead. First introduced in 1996, Flash, it seems, will stick around a little longer, even in light of Apple’s dominance. —Devin Chanda
