Google Launches Groupon Competitor, 'Offers'

After having its $6 billion bid to buy Groupon turned down, Google has decided to take on the popular online deal site with its own service called Google Offers

The service is currently only available in Portland, Ore., but people in New York City, Oakland, and San Francisco can sign up to be notified of deals in their respective cities. Once signed up, users will get e-mails alerting them to deals in their area worth at least 50% off.

Rumors began to build in January that Google was preparing to launch a Groupon and Living Social competitor, but the company shied away from discussing the new venture saying only that it was building a stronger relationship with business owners.

With Google's infrastructure, visibility, and steep discounts, it's sure to lure at least a few people away from the two deal heavy weights.
