Too soon? Dreamworks hasn't even released Real Steel, director Shawn Levy's robot boxing movie slated for an October 7 release, but already the company has hired John Gatins, who wrote the film's script, to start working a sequel.
Based on a short story by Richard Matheson, who wrote the novel Real Steel tells the story of a prize fighter (Hugh Jackman) whose hand-to-hand combat skills are rendered obsolete when human pugilists are replaced by robots. Forced to become a boxing promoter, Jackman finds a discarded robot that continuously wins on its way to becoming a title contender.
The studio received a strong response when footage of the Rocky-meets-Transformers tale screened at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, and now it anticipates a strong showing at the box office. When the bell rings on October 7, we'll see if the studio was right to start developing a sequel so soon.
