Nikki Giovanni's credibility smothers most other writers, especially within the hip-hop community. While other writers were fumbling with what to do with hip-hop, pondering asinine questions like, "Is it a good thing?", Giovanni was dedicating an entire book of poetry to Tupac (see her book Love Poems). She played an active role in the black power movement in the '60s, and in 2010 was commissioned to write a poem for President Obama's inauguration. She's even got a Grammy nomination. Catch her in Chicago Saturday for a free reading.
