Watch 200 Vintage Appliances Make Beautiful Music

Classically trained composer puts old gadgets to work in cool music exhibit.

They just don't make 'em like they used to. Just ask Michael Peterman, the man behind "The Stupid Orchestra"

Made up over 200 vintage household appliances, Peterman, a classically trained orchestra conductor and composer, started the project back in 2002 as a way to combine his musicianship with his interest in electronic instruments. Instead of instruments, however, he opted for appliances.

Peterman told Co.Design that it took him a long time to find the right appliances to use. Refusing all new appliances, he chose ones designed between 1940 and 1975 because after that companies "changed considerably towards making things look alike."

The electronic orchestra he put together was controlled by a system he designed called a "MIDI-to-Household-Appliance-Interface" which runs off of his laptop. The resulting 35 minute symphony is currently on display at the MKG Hamburg in Hamburg, Germany until April 30.
