Honest Abe's long-awaited biopic keeps sounding better and better. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Tommy Lee Jones, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, James Spader, Tim Blake Nelson, and a host of others are in negotiations to join Steven Spielberg's upcoming biopic of Abraham Lincoln, simply titled Lincoln.

The DreamWorks picture is shaping up to be an Academy Award-skewing project of the highest caliber. Daniel Day-Lewis is already slated to play the 16th President of the United States, with Sally Field on board as his wife, Mary Todd.

Jones will play Thaddeus Stevens, a Republican leader and congressman from Pennsylvania, who was a staunch abolitionist. Playing the president's eldest son, Robert Todd Lincoln, will be Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Based on Doris Kearns Goodwin's novel Team Of Rivals, Lincoln will center on "the political collision of Lincoln and the powerful men of his cabinet on the road to abolition and the end of the Civil War." The man behind 2005's history-drama Munich, Tony Kushner, has been tapped for screenwriting duties.

The project will begin shooting this fall in Virginia for a late 2012 release, via Disney's Touchstone label.
