GameStop Sending Deus Ex PC Back to Sender

In the ongoing battle between SquareEnix / Eidos and GameStop, things just got even uglier.

In the latest move in what everyone can agree is a complete mess, GameStop has issued an order to its stores to pull all copies of the regular PC editions of Deus Ex: Human Revolution from store shelves. As you may or may not be aware, controversy swirled earlier this week when it was discovered that GameStop had issued internal instructions for employees to open all copies of the PC version of the game and remove the included coupon for a free copy of the game through the OnLive service.

Gamestop’s gripe with the product is that it includes a coupon for what they consider to be a competitive service as they plan on entering the streaming-gaming market later this year with their own comparable service. While the public is not taking too kindly to Gamestop and their actions, Square Enix is taking a more respectful approach.  Their official statement on the topic was issued as the following:

“…Square Enix respects the right of GameStop to have final say over the contents of products it sells and to adjust them where they see fit in accordance with their policies.”

GameStop stands by their decision and has pulled the PC version of the game from its shelves completely, stating that it will not sell that version of the game until Square Enix packages them without the coupon.

We have a strong suspicion that this issue is far from over…
