Google Reportedly Wants Its Own MP3 Store

Google's own iTunes might be in the works.

None

Citing record execs, Google is looking to open its own MP3 store linked to its Music Beta cloud service, according to the New York Times.

Launched earlier this year, Beta lets users upload their digital collections to a “locker” in a cloud for remote access, but offers no options for purchasing new music, unlike iTunes and the iCloud and Amazon’s own Cloud Music. An MP3 store by Google would not only allow standard purchases, but also let people connect their collections to a central database—a service that could go well beyond cloud matching. With their large Android base, providing better mobile synchronization is possibly a significant motivation for Google in this endeavor.

Of course, the only stumbling blocks are, as in the past, the record labels and licensing, though an October release date is still a possibility.
