As the release date of Steve Jobs’ eponymous biography, written by Walter Isaacson, approaches, excerpts have begun to pour out, in particular, revealing his utter contempt for Google’s Android OS.
In the iPhone’s competitor, Jobs saw a blatant copycat who went from clunky, keyboard-based phones to minimalist touchscreens post-2007. Therefore, he was unwilling to negotiate a financial settlement over any copyright claims. “I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple’s $40 billion in the bank to right this wrong,” said Jobs. “I’m going to destroy Android, because it’s a stolen product. I’m willing to go thermonuclear war on this.”
In a later meeting with Google head Eric Schmidt, he was quoted as saying, “I don’t want your money. If you offer me $5 billion, I won’t want it. I’ve got plenty of money. I want you to stop using our ideas in Android, that’s all I want.”
