38 Studios and Big Huge Games just announced the special editions for their first major title, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. And wouldn't you know, they range in size from BIG to HUGE.
There is your standard $60 copy of the game, and $80 "Special Edition," a $200 "Collector's Edition," and a $275 "Signature Edition." For the sheer amount of stuff there is to list in each one, you'd be best to hop over to the website, where you can pre-order these beasts.
So for those of you who are unfamiliar with the game or it's creators, take a serious look. Just know that you have a single-player experience that started life as an MMO, which should speak to the scope of the game. As for the gameplay, see for yourself. And with Todd MacFarlane in the mix, the art has a lot of potential.
It's clear from the sheer breadth of these special editions that 38 Studios has some big plans for it. And for the gameplay that's out so far, it looks like there is a growing effort to streamline deep, engrossing RPG's in a way that's not alienating to long-time fans. Between this and D&D: Castle Ravenloft, it seems someone is trying to dissolve the stigma around us folks who own a d20.
Kingdoms of Amalur: Recknoning is out February 7, 2012. And that will also be the day that FedEx and UPS petition against 38 Studios shipping special editions of this size.
