While The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo may have already garnered positive reviews and strong support from the original novel's fanbase, the box-office returns have been soft at best. Pulling in a mere $60 million so far in the U.S., The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has fallen behind Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked at the box-office, which is a huge disappointment due to the high expectations Sony had for the movie. With its intense subject matter and graphic nature, the movie was always going to be a hard sell for the general public looking for a family film to watch during the Holiday season.
But according to Entertainment Weekly, a sequel to the film is still in the works despite the original underperforming at the box-office. The next installment, which will be based off of the sequel novel The Girl who Played with Fire, will likely still star Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig, but it isn't known whether or not David Fincher will return as director.
A Sony rep told Entertainment Weekly, "[Dragon Tattoo] continues to do strong business and nothing has changed with respect to development of the next book." Then again, hundreds of movies go into development but never wind up seeing the light of day.
If this sequel does indeed happen, and subsequently gains more of an audience than the original, there might also be enough interest to generate a third movie, which would be based off of The Girl who Kicked the Hornets' Nest.
