Final Fantasy Creator: HD Graphics Get in the Way of Game Design

Hironobu Sakaguchi thinks we should be spending a little less time on how games look.

Hironobu Sakaguchi, the father of Final Fantasy, isn't such a big fan of working on HD platforms. In an interview with Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, Sakaguchi remarked that developing games with cutting-edge HD graphics isn't necessarily worth the effort, specifically calling HD visuals "over the top" and "excessive."

"To be honest, I think that the HD images which have become mainstream in the TV industry are, for me personally, still rather over the top for the world of video games. There’s a tendency for developers to allow all their energy to be diverted into maintaining the high quality of the graphics."

These comments are somewhat surprising coming from the creator of Final Fantasy, a series has that been lauded time again for both its artwork and graphical fidelity. Of course, as MCV points out, Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2 are the only two entries in the series developed specifically for HD platforms.
