New Mexico Man Tries to Register His Dog to Vote, Actually Succeeds

So, is the dog a Democrat or a Republican?

In an attempt to show that the voter registration system is flawed, a New Mexico resident has successfully registered his dog, Buddy, to vote. First, we've got a cat running for senate, and now this? What is up with the world?

The man says he used fake information to register his dog as a Democrat in a voter registration booth at the University of New Mexico. "I made up a birthdate and I made up a Social Security number, and I had a voter registration card in my hand for Buddy two weeks later."

He claims that he doesn't actually want to use Buddy's name to vote, and was simply trying to show that there's a problem with the voter registration system. It's a weird way to make a point, but you do have to admit that there may be a problem since this dog now actually is a registered voter in the state of New Mexico.

"They should verify," the man said of the current system, "Somebody should have verified this information and somebody should have come out and took a look at exactly who it was. We’re going to have a lot of people that are registered to vote that shouldn’t be able to vote."

Though the man did point out a flaw in the system, the Bernalillo County Clerk's Office isn't too grateful - in fact, they say that the man has committed voter fraud. "I would warn those individuals who think this type of activity is a joke or a ‘gotcha’ that, regardless of their intentions, they have broken the law and will therefore have to be subject to due process of law,” clerk Maggie Toulouse Oliver said of Buddy's owner.
