Believe it or not, New York City is not the most expensive place to rent a two-bedroom apartment. As a matter of fact, it's not even the most expensive place in the state.

Information from the National Low Income Housing Coalition shows that it actually costs more to rent a standard two-bedroom place in Long Island than it does in NYC. The average rent in the city is $1,424, but jumps up to $1,682 in Long Island

Although that's pretty steep, it's still not the most expensive in the country. San Francisco holds that distinction, as the fair market price for a two-bedroom out there is $1,905 per month. Oh, and in case you were wondering, the national average is $949.

Though New York rents are always high, they rank lower on this list because they aren't broken down by borough and are often rent-controlled. Figure A shows how housing wages are broken down by state, and for a look at areas with the highest housing wages, take a look a the second image.
