Did Egyptian Parliament Really Pass This Law?

Appalling.

None

Earlier this week, a report from Al Arabiya claimed that Egypt's new predominantly Islamist parliament was on the verge of introducing a law that would allow husbands to have sex with their dead wives up to six hours after death. It was reported that the "Farewell Intercourse law" is part of a series of reforms that would also lower the minimum age for marriage to 13.

People were understandably pissed, and the Egypt's National Council for Women said the government was "marginalising and undermining the status of women." Some believe that the laws may be a way to erase the memory former dictator Hosni Mubarak, as many laws were created to protect women's rights under the previous regime.

However, many Egyptian sources dismissed the law as a rumor, possibly started by Mubarak loyalists. Even if it were true, we can't imagine why anyone would want to have sex with a dead spouse.
