Director Marc Webb Reveals Details About Peter Parker's Updated Origin In "Amazing Spider-Man"

This ain't your father's Wall Crawler.

None

When you go into the theaters to watch The Amazing Spider-Man this summer, don't expect to see the same origin story for the Wall Crawler that appeared on the screen 10 years ago in Sam Raimi's version. In fact, you shouldn't expect the mysteries behind Peter Parker's transformation into Spider-Man to even be wrapped up by the time the closing credits roll. In an interview with MTV, director Marc Webb gave some insight on his revamped origin for the Web Slinger.

"I wanted to give the audience something new, so that started off with getting underneath the parents' story, which will unfold over probably a few movies," Webb told the site. "We don't totally wrap up that story in this first movie. It's sort of an ongoing mystery. That was something that was interesting to me."

It remains to be seen whether Peter Parker's parents will be U.S. spies like in the mainstream Marvel Universe or scientists like the Ultimate Universe, but it seems like Webb is setting up a deep mystery behind their deaths that could have something to do with Norman Osborn. One thing that is confirmed, though, is that Peter Parker's origins won't bring him into a wrestling ring like last time.

"This is probably a reveal," he said, "but there is no wrestling match in this movie. The character is evolving in a different way. It's about finding a balance between iconic elements of the Spider-Man mythology—like how Uncle Ben's death transforms him emotionally—but it happens in a different way."

Some hardcore fans might find this blasphemous, but Webb is taking pains to make sure that this origin doesn't tread over the same territory as Raimi's. And to further cement that fact, he hints that the spider that bites Parker might not even be radioactive like the comics.

"He's bitten by a spider," Webb told MTV, "but maybe it's not a radioactive spider. Or maybe it is! You'll have to see."

We'll have to wait until the movie hits theaters on July 3 to see just how much of Spider-Man's origins Marc Webb changes.
