In a world where time travel exists, members of the mafia have figured out that they can commit fool-proof murder by sending a subject back in time and letting someone from the past do the dirty work for them. That's where Joseph Gordon-Levitt steps in as his role as a looper, one of the men in the past in charge of whacking these targets. The only problem is that one of these targets happens to be a version of himself from the future, played by Bruce Willis.

That's the premise behind director Rian Johnson's new film, Looper, which looks to follow the twisting sci-fi plots of recent movies like Source Code, Moon, and Inception. Here we get sci-fi in its raw form. It looks smart, unpredictable, and never trades in its plot for laser guns and spaceships. In the spirit of authors like Isaac Asimov, Philip K. Dick, and William Gibson, Looper is more concerned with testing the mind than dazzling the eye.

With a movie that needs more explanation than your average story, this trailer for Looper is heavy on exposition and light on pretty much everything else. We're still not sure how well Gordon-Levitt and Willis are going pull off playing the same character on the screen at the same time, but it's hard to bet against talent like this. For anyone looking to cleanse their palates after the flood of summer blockbusters insult our collective intelligence, Looper might be just what you're looking for.

Looper opens on September 28.
